The ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) will hold its 31st National Congress this weekend, where more than 2,000 delegates from all 21 provinces are expected to elect a new party chairperson.

In recent months, the party has faced growing internal divisions. Following the parliamentary vote that removed the prime minister, the case was referred to the Constitutional Court, while D.Amarbayasgalan, who had been elected as party chair at the General Assembly in September, voluntarily resigned from his post as Speaker of Parliament.

Now, both Prime Minister G.Zandanshatar and former Speaker D.Amarbayasgalan have officially announced that they will not run for party leader. Zandanshatar emphasized that he is prioritizing national issues over personal political advancement, while Amarbayasgalan said his decision was based on ethical grounds, explaining that he wishes to resolve pending legal matters and restore his reputation.

This paves the way for the MPP to elect a new leader. According to political analysts, Deputy Prime Minister N.Uchral, Cabinet Secretariat Head S.Byambatsogt, and Minister of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry J.Enkhbayar are seen as likely contenders.

Attention is also turning to how the party rule linking the chairmanship and the prime minister’s office will be interpreted. Will Zandanshatar give up his position as prime minister, or will the new party leader seek to take that post? Another possibility is that the party chair might instead pursue leadership of Parliament.

Whoever becomes the new MPP chair will face the demanding task of leading the party through the 2027 presidential election and the 2028 parliamentary election.
