Throughout last week, teachers from general education schools and kindergartens held a protest in Sukhbaatar Square, demanding that their base salary be raised to 3.5 million tugriks. Representatives of the Confederation of Mongolian Education and Science Trade Unions met officially with Prime Minister G.Zandanshatar to discuss the issue.

During the meeting, G.Zandanshatar noted that the government has declared the coming year the “Year to Support Education.” He stated that investment in the education sector will be doubled, with an additional 100 billion tugriks allocated in the budget for variable expenses.

According to calculations by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, reaching the proposed salary level would require 3.3 trillion tugriks annually. Considering the current fiscal situation, the government proposed a phased increase, aiming to raise the base salary to 1.8 million tugriks starting January 1 next year and to 2.5 million tugriks by mid-2026, eventually reaching 3.5 million tugriks by 2028.

However, teachers’ unions announced that they would begin a nationwide strike on October 16, saying that the government’s plan fails to meet their immediate demands for a fair wage.
