Mongolian Filmmakers Gain Spotlight as Oscar Entries Announced
Australia has officially selected The Wolves Always Come at Night (a joint Australian, Mongolian, and German production) as its entry for the Best International Feature category at the 2026 Academy Awards.
The film tells the story of herder D.Davaasuren’s family from Bayankhongor, who are forced to leave their homeland and move to Ulaanbaatar due to the impacts of climate change. Sixteen films competed for the Australian nomination, with The Wolves Always Come at Night ultimately chosen.

At the same time, Mongolia will also be represented at the 98th Academy Awards. The National Selection Committee reviewed submissions from local filmmakers and chose director J.Sengedorj’s feature film Silent City Driver as the country’s official Oscar entry. The film will compete in the preliminary selection round for the Best International Feature.

Together, these announcements mark a historic moment: two films rooted in Mongolian stories are now on the road to the world’s most prestigious film awards.
