As global attention turns toward COP30, set to take place in Belém, Brazil, Mongolia has announced an updated national commitment to implementing the Paris Agreement. This marks the third revision of countries’ “Nationally Determined Contributions” (NDCs) since 2015.

Mongolia has set the following key targets:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30.3% (24.7 million tons) by 2035.
  • Further cut emissions by an additional 16%, reaching a total reduction of 46.3%, through improved land use and actions that enhance carbon absorption in soils, rangelands, and forests.
  • With international financial and technological support, Mongolia aims to reduce emissions by an additional 6.2%, bringing the total potential reduction to 52.8%, through large-scale projects across key sectors.
  • Develop an AI-based integrated platform to implement the National Adaptation Plan, measure results, and ensure transparent reporting.
  • Establish a carbon market mechanism in partnership with the Swiss Confederation, enabling Mongolia to trade verified reductions and removals of greenhouse gases on international markets.

Implementing these goals is estimated to require a total of ₮53.3 trillion ($14.8 billion), which is planned to be mobilized through public-private partnerships and international funding sources.

For reference, over the past decade Mongolia has worked with the Green Climate Fund to carry out climate-related projects worth more than $400 million, contributing to efforts to combat climate change.
