Samantha Mostyn, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, has paid an official visit to Mongolia. The last time an Australian governor-general came to the country was in 1994, when Bill Hayden made the trip.

During her visit, Mostyn held formal talks with President U.Khurelsukh, discussing opportunities for cooperation in education, agriculture, and the mining sector. The two sides also agreed to soon elevate bilateral relations to the level of a “Comprehensive Partnership.” The two countries had previously established an “Expanded Partnership” in 2007.

While in Mongolia, Governor-General Mostyn, accompanied by her spouse S.Beckett, traveled to Umnugovi Province to visit the Oyu Tolgoi underground mine, the largest project in Mongolia with Australian investment. She also visited the herder household of Ts.Iderborgil in Khanbogd soum, where she was introduced to the lifestyle and cultural traditions of Mongolia’s nomadic people. Notably, Ts.Iderborgil’s daughter is currently studying in Australia, and the family presented the governor-general with a camel as a gift.
