Classrooms and Clinics Go Silent
Teachers at public schools and kindergartens across Mongolia have been on strike for a third consecutive week. The protest, which began with about 10,000 teachers, has now expanded to include more than 30,000 nationwide.
Currently, 596 schools and kindergartens have suspended operations. Last week, the “self-study week” provided an opportunity for negotiations, but the two sides failed to reach an agreement. Teachers are demanding a base salary of 3.5 million MNT, while the government says it can only increase wages by 20% starting in 2026.
Meanwhile, from October 27, doctors and medical workers have also joined the movement, demanding the same pay level. They have organized peaceful demonstrations around Sukhbaatar Square in Ulaanbaatar.
