The long-discussed project to build Mongolia’s Fifth Thermal Power Plant has finally selected its contractor. After a four-stage bidding process, Cambodia-based Mitaim International won with a score of 75 points. In the final round, Mongolia’s own Shunkhlai LLC was the remaining competitor.

The project carries a total cost of $658 million. Construction and installation are expected to take 24 months, followed by a six-month trial period. Once fully operational, the plant will provide heating for 40,000 households in western Ulaanbaatar, while producing 340 Gcal of heat and 300 MW of electricity.

Mitaim International has prior experience in Mongolia, having built the Toson power station in Zavkhan Province, which generates 30 MW annually. For this project, the company has signed a 25-year concession agreement with the capital city, committing to finance construction itself and then hand over the completed facility.
